Reading - Phonics
We use a validated systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) scheme called Sounds Write to support our teaching and learning of phonics. Its purpose is to provide classroom professionals with a comprehensive system with which to teach reading, spelling and writing. It is introduced in Reception (YR), taught in KS1 and fine-tuned throughout the rest of Key Stage 2. In Year 1, all children undergo the statutory phonics screening check.
For further information on Sounds Write, please take a look at the leaflet below or watch their introductory video.

Sounds Write have developed their own app available for use on iPads. This app offers a variety of activities to develop the skills of blending and segmenting, sound spelling correspondence, word reading and writing and some sentences reading and writing.
The app introduces all the sound-spelling correspondences your child needs to learn to put them well on the way to learning to read and write.

We know that modelling reading at home will strongly support your child's learning and development. We have 'Reading at Home' workshops running throughout the year to provide opportunities to learn together about how best to help your child to read. We also host 'Cosy Book Cafes' to encourage reading for pleasure as a school community.
