Our reception learners are in their final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). This is a guide that outlines what to expect when in the EYFS for parents highlighting the crucial learning and development that takes place for every child between birth and five years old.

At Maiden Beech Primary Academy (MBPA), we are committed to giving your child the best start to their education at school. This begins with our transition in the summer term before they begin school in September. Further information on starting at MBPA can be found in our Welcome Pack and Admission Forms. We encourage parents and adults at home to use the Starting Reception website for ideas to support transition at home.

We are a school that has reading at the heart of our curriculum. This begins with each child receiving a book as part of their transition. We also actively encourage our school starters to read the suggested books below to help them prepare for their transition.

Teaching and learning in Reception is directed by the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. It covers seven areas of learning which are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal and Social Development
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our reception learners have a balance of child initiated and adult directed learning throughout the day. This provides the necessary opportunities for teaching and learning alongside encouraging our learners to make choices for themselves. All reception learners have access to indoor and outdoor learning We promote a nurturing environment within our early years, we try to ensure the children are happy, secure and eager to come to school to learn.

The phonics programme that is used in Reception is called 'Sounds Write'.  Children are taught daily phonics lessons to help them become confident readers with a love of reading.

Learning is celebrated and shared using an online learning platform - Class Dojo. This allows the learning and development of each child to be captured fully and creates a partnership between home and school.

For more information on what your child will be learning in each term and how you can extend their learning beyond school, please take a look at their class page on Class Dojo.
